Welcome to Laura Wilkins Art Gallery where abstraction meets realism
A sanctuary of watercolor, where nature’s fleeting moments take lasting form. Every brushstroke becomes a meditation on stillness, memory, and the quiet poetry of the natural world—an invitation to pause, breathe, and discover beauty in the spaces between.
‘The Air Between Us’
The Air Between Us is the title I’ve given to this ongoing collection of bird paintings, a series born from silence, brush, and breath, capturing the essence of avian life. The name carries a double meaning: it refers to the literal space birds inhabit—the open air, the expanse of sky—and also to the invisible distance between beings, a space that can hold longing, connection, or quiet understanding.
In these watercolors, birds become more than subjects. They are metaphors for presence and transition, for the pauses between leaving and returning, for the stillness inside movement. Whether it is a hummingbird hovering above flowers, a pair of parrots resting close together, or a roadrunner paused mid-journey, each painting captures a fleeting moment that could easily pass unnoticed in life, yet lingers when rendered in pigment and water.
I work with brushes that allow for both precision and fluidity, letting the unpredictability of water, pigment, and salt mimic the untamed energy of nature. This process reflects the essence of the birds themselves—delicate yet resilient, fleeting yet eternal in their patterns of return.
The Air Between Us is not one story but many, exploring the spaces between silence and song, solitude and companionship, motion and rest, much like the varied lives of the birds depicted. Each painting offers a fragment of that space, a reminder that connection often lives in what cannot be spoken but can always be felt.
